A Metaphorical Framework on Human Nature: An Evaluation of the Core Model in the Context of Career and Development

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the metaphor “Human beings resemble a seed” in the context of individual development and career trajectories, examining the interaction between innate potential and environmental, educational, and social factors. As part of the study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 academics who had experience teaching career planning courses. The study was designed within the framework of a qualitative research approach. The collected data were thematically analyzed within the framework of human development, environmental influence, career orientation, and social contribution. The findings indicate that, just as a seed requires suitable soil, water, air, and sunlight to grow healthily, human career development depends on favorable environmental and educational conditions. The realization of an individual’s potential is shaped not only by innate abilities but also by supportive environments, guidance, and opportunities, highlighting that career growth, like a seed maturing into a tree, requires systematic and comprehensive support. The seed metaphor provides a strong conceptual framework for understanding human potential and development while emphasizing that individuals are active agents capable of conscious choice, self-transformation, and influencing their surroundings. Furthermore, the results reveal that individual success and social contribution are complementary rather than opposing processes. This model underscores the critical role of environmental conditions in sustainably developing potential and stresses the importance of considering social responsibility alongside personal abilities in career planning. Overall, the study demonstrates that the seed metaphor offers a holistic and functional framework for understanding human development and career pathways.

İnsan Doğasına Dair Metaforik Bir Çerçeve: Çekirdek Modelinin Kariyer ve Gelişim Bağlamında Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Çalışmanın amacı, “İnsan bir çekirdeğe benzer” metaforunu bireysel gelişim ve kariyer süreçleri bağlamında değerlendirerek, doğuştan gelen potansiyel ile çevresel, eğitsel ve toplumsal faktörler arasındaki etkileşimi incelemektir. Araştırma kapsamında, kariyer planlama dersi verme deneyimine sahip 10 akademisyen ile yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma, nitel araştırma yaklaşımı çerçevesinde tasarlanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler; insan gelişimi, çevresel etkiler, kariyer yönelimi ve toplumsal katkı temaları çerçevesinde tematik analiz yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, tıpkı bir çekirdeğin sağlıklı bir şekilde gelişebilmesi için uygun toprak, su, hava ve güneş ışığına ihtiyaç duyması gibi, bireyin kariyer gelişiminin de elverişli çevresel ve eğitsel koşullara bağlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Bireyin sahip olduğu potansiyelin ortaya çıkması yalnızca doğuştan sahip olduğu yeteneklere değil; aynı zamanda destekleyici çevreye, rehberliğe ve sunulan fırsatlara da bağlıdır. Bu durum, çekirdeğin zamanla bir ağaca dönüşmesi gibi, kariyer gelişiminin de planlı, sistemli ve çok boyutlu bir destek süreci gerektirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Çekirdek metaforu, insanın potansiyelini ve gelişim sürecini anlamada güçlü bir kavramsal çerçeve sunarken, bireyin bilinçli seçimler yapabilen, kendini dönüştürebilen ve içinde bulunduğu çevreyi etkileyebilen aktif bir özne olduğunu da vurgulamaktadır. Ayrıca araştırma bulguları, bireysel başarı ile toplumsal katkının birbirine karşıt değil, aksine birbirini tamamlayan süreçler olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu model, bireyin sahip olduğu potansiyelin sürdürülebilir biçimde geliştirilebilmesi için çevresel koşulların kritik önem taşıdığını vurgulamakta; kariyer planlama sürecinde kişisel yeteneklerin yanı sıra toplumsal sorumluluğun da dikkate alınması gerektiğine işaret etmektedir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, çekirdek metaforunun, insanın gelişimini ve kariyer yolculuğunu bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla anlamada işlevsel ve açıklayıcı bir kavramsal çerçeve sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
