Middle School Students’ Understanding of Some Geometry Symbols
Abstract
Geometry is an area that should be given attention, especially in primary and middle school, because it has built on abstract concepts and relationships between these concepts. The use of symbols can help students to learn geometry as well as algebra. Therefore, it is thought that the detection and comprehension of middle school students’ understandings who have previously encountered with the geometry symbols is important. Hence, the aim of the research is to reveal how the middle school students perceive the geometry symbols. In the study, multiple-case study, qualitative research design, was used. The participants of the study consist of 133 middle school students. Documents with open-ended questions which are associated with the geometric symbols were used as a main data collection tool. The interviews were conducted with the students who were decided that the expressions in the documents were not understood. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis technique. As a result, It is found that the participants have developed more than one understanding related to the symbols and have often focused on appearance and the letters, signs in the symbols. As a result of this focusing participants often misunderstood the symbols.
