Abstract

Dominic Head’in 2022 yılında Arzu Eylem tarafından Türkçeye kazandırılan Modern Öykü: Teorik ve Pratik Bir Çalışma adlı kitabını değerlendiren bu yazıda öncelikle Head’in öykü teorisine yönelik eleştirel tutumu özetleniyor. Ardından kitabın teorik arka planıyla James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Wyndham Lewis ve Malcolm Lowry’nin öykülerinin çözümlendiği bölümler arasındaki ilişki değerlendiriliyor. Karşısına aldığı öykü kuramcılarının 1992’de kitabın orijinali yayımlandığında Head’i hangi açılardan eleştirdiğinden kısaca söz edildikten sonra edebiyat çalışmalarında bu tür teorik tartışmaların eleştirel düşünceye sağladığı katkı vurgulanıyor. Yazının son bölümünde ise Türkçe çevirideki kimi tercihlerin özellikle öykü teorisine aşina olmayan okur için yaratabileceği sorunlara değiniliyor.

A Review on The Modernist Short Story: A Study in Theory and Practice

Abstract

This review examines the Turkish translation of Dominic Head’s The Modernist Short Story: A Study in Theory and Practice. Translated by Arzu Eylem and published in 2022 by NotaBene Press, the book takes a critical approach to existing short story theories. The review starts with a summary of Head’s criticisms and then evaluates the relationship between the theoretical and practical chapters of the book. Head’s readings of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Wyndham Lewis, and Malcolm Lowry are considered in this context. After briefly mentioning how the writer was criticized when the book was originally published in 1992, the review underlines the importance of such theoretical discussions in literary studies. The final part of the review draws attention to some semantic mistakes and problematic word choices in Turkish translation, which, it suggests, might be misleading for readers who are not familiar with the short story theory.
