An Iranian Intellectual in Istanbul: Mirza Malkum Khan and Reform Proposals for the Ottoman Arabic Alphabet

Abstract

Istanbul became a center that attracted reformist Muslim intellectuals from different countries in the Tanzīmāt era (1839-1876). Among these were Mirza Malkum Khan and Mirza Fethali Akhunzāde, who revived a discussion on reforming the Arabic alphabet in the 1860s. Malkum and Akhunzāde regarded the Ottoman capital as the center of the entire Muslim World, thus the ideal place to initiate such a radical and vital reform. Mirza Akhundzâde and Mirza Malkum Khan aimed to draw the attention of Iranian and Ottoman public opinion synchronously to an inevitable alphabet reform, and the latter tried to legitimize it through the imperial patent to execute his reform project. As an Armenian-origin Iranian intellectual, to accept his reform project to the Sublime Porte, Malkum constituted a vast political network in Istanbul that this paper will also analyze. This article aims to examine Malkum Khan’s political activities in Istanbul, around his reform project that the first concrete alphabet reform project submitted to the Ottoman state in light of Ottoman documents.
