Priskos Yanılgısı: Margus Barışı’ndan Önce Ne Oldu?

Abstract

Attila ve Bleda hükümdarlığındaki (yak. 435-445) Hunların Doğu Romalılar ile münasebetlerinde öne çıkan unsur, Roma Balkanlarındaki (Thraciae ve Illyricum) askeri mücadelelerdir. Bunlara dair verilerin önemli bir kısmı dönemin çağdaşı Priskos’un günümüze fragmanlarla erişen “Tarih”ine dayanmakla birlikte bu fragmanlar, X. yüzyılda derlenen bir külliyatta (Excerpta Constantiniana) korunmuş olup, teması gereği iki yönetim arasındaki elçilik faaliyetleriyle (excerpta de legationibus) ilgilidir. Priskos fragmanlarının bu durumu, Hun ve Doğu Roma devletleri arasındaki diplomasinin ardında yatan askeri-siyasi gelişmelerin takip edilmesi adına sunduğu bağlamların muğlak hale kalmasına neden olmuştur. Bu da konuya eğilen modern tarihçilerin fragmanlarda aktarılan gelişmeleri kronolojik bir çerçeveye yerleştirebilmek adına kendi kavrayışları dahilinde farklı kurgular geliştirmesine müsaade etmiştir. Bu nedenle Attila ve Bleda’nın hükümdarlıkları döneminde Hun - Doğu Roma münasebetlerinin kronolojik düzeni hususunda tarihi tanıklık olarak Priskos fragmanlarının doğasına ve kullanımına dayalı genel bir kargaşa ortamı mevcuttur. Bu çalışma, Attila ve Bleda’nın Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu ile –bilindiği kadarıyla- ilk askeri ve diplomasi münasebetleri kapsamında Margus Barışı’nı ihtiva eden fragmanın (fragman 1) ele alınış problemini berraklaştırmaya çalışmakla birlikte bu barışın ve öncesindeki gelişmelerin yeni bir kurgusunu önermektedir.

The Priscus Fallacy: What Happened Before the Treaty of Margus?

Abstract

The prominent factor in the relations between the Eastern Romans and the Huns under the reigns of Attila and Bleda (c. 435-445) is the military struggles in the Roman Balkans (Thraciae and Illyricum). Although a significant part of the data on these is based on the "History" of Priskos, a contemporary of the period, which has reached with fragmentary, these fragmentary have been preserved in a corpus (Excerpta Constantiniana) compiled in the 10th century, and are related to the embassy activities (excerpta de legationibus) due to their theme. This situation of the Priskos fragments has caused the context to remain ambiguous in order to follow the military-political developments behind the diplomacy between the Huns and the Eastern Roman states. This also allowed modern historians to develop different constructions within their own understanding in order to place the developments in the fragments in a chronological order. For this reason, there is a general turmoil based on the nature and use of Priskos fragments as historical evidence regarding the chronological order of Hun-Eastern Roman relations in the period of Attila and Bleda. This study, while trying to clarify the problem of handling the fragment (Fragment 1)containing the Treaty of Margus within the scope of the first military and diplomatic relations of Attila and Bleda with the Eastern Roman Empire, proposes a new construction of this peace and the developments before it.
