Languages Policy and Society Conscious in tThe 90’s Years Of XXth Century and in the Early XXIst Century in Bashkortostan

Abstract

In the early 1990s, laws on languages were adopted and indigenous languages, along with the Russian language, were declared official languages in many republics in the Russian Federation. Due to the complex ethno-linguistic situation in the Republic of Bashkortostan, these processes took longer. Of particularly great controversy among the public was the issue of the number of official languages. Three decisions of the issue was suggested : to declare one, two, or three languages to be official. It was stressed that the main reason for declaring an indigenous language to be official was to protect it from extinction. Similar thoughts were expressed by public figures of the Chuvash Republic. The question of whether or not the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan should speak the Bashkir language has been favorably resolved thanks to progressive social thought
