The Bulgarian Thracian Committee (1918-1934)

Abstract

The socio-economical conditions surrounding the Ottoman state during the 19th century led to appearance of many underground revolutionary activities and brigandage. Especially Balkan organizations of those kinds represented social and economic uprising against the state, as well as separatist movements. Their aims in general were to create troubles in their regions and to influence local and international public opinion in order to call attention of European grand states. This was to pave the way to independence. One of the latest formations of this group was the Bulgarian Thracian Committee, which was founded in 1918 in the Western Thrace by the Bulgarian government, and which later continued its activities in Bulgaria. This essay outlines history of the Committee as it appeared in Turkish sources, and tells about its underground activities between 1918-1934.
