On the Turkic and Hungarian Common Personal Name ‘Ede’

Abstract

ABSTRACT ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The personal nomen ‘Ede’ was firstly recorded in the Old Anatolian Turkic among the Turks. The most famous name belongs to Sheikh Ede Balı, father-in- law and guide of Osman Beg, founder of the Ottoman Empire. The same word was recorded in the old Hungarian annals, too, as a personal name. Regarding the fact that there are a lot of names common between the Turks and the Old Hungarians, one should carefully analyze this case, too, in those terms. A study on the Hungarian sources intimates that the name is common and cognate among the two peoples. Moreover, there are some clues of the possibility that Hungarian once had the verb ed- and the name ed as its own words
