Year 2009, Volume: 9 Issue: 1, 131 - 136, 01.05.2009

Abstract

On the question of illumination in the medieval town of Shamkir

Year 2009, Volume: 9 Issue: 1, 131 - 136, 01.05.2009

Abstract

The remains of the medieval town of Shamkir are situated in Shamkir region of
Azerbaijan Republic on the north from Mukhtariyye settlement, between Mukhtariyye and
Kechili villages, on the left coast of the Shamkirchay river.
As a result of regular and systematic excavations the remains of material culture
dating back to 8-13th centuries were discovered, the main part of which was ceramics.
According to the technology of production the given ceramics can be divided into
2 groups: Simple and glazed ceramics. As to the type of usage, there are household,
kitchen, table ceramics and etc.
We tried to consider ceramic products (vessels) used for illumination, that is lamps
in this article. It should be noted that 64 lamps were found during the excavations. As it was
found out the fuel mixture for the most lamps was crude oil. However there was a group of
lamps where grease (oil) was used for the same purpose.
As it was ascertained the lamps found in Shamkir are identical to those found in
Beylagan and especially in Gandja and enter into the circle of Arran ceramics.
