This study aims to examine the production, area planted, foreign trade, and sufficiency levels of strategically important agricultural products (wheat, barley, maize, cotton, and hazelnuts) in Türkiye between 2001 and 2023 to demonstrate their importance for sustainable agricultural policies. Analyses in light of TÜİK and TEPGE show that Türkiye has been able to sustain the capacity to produce strategic products, yet there still exists some reliance on external sources for certain products. The results show that increases in productivity for wheat, barley and maize are positive signs for sustainability, despite threats to production stability coming from climate change, water scarcity and increasing input costs. Energy and water requirements in cotton production are high, which has implications for sustainability, but organic production and water saving measures have potential. The strategic significance of hazelnuts for Türkiye in the global agricultural market is also sustained in terms of sufficiency and export. The findings suggest that, although Türkiye has experienced some production fluctuation over the years, production in strategic goods can be considered as relatively stable with environmental and economic threats to sustainability which need to be controlled through the use of appropriate policy instruments in the coming years. The study highlights that focusing on strategic products in sustainable agricultural policies is a crucial need for rural development and food security.
