Local Names of Plants Which Have Traditional Usages in Biga and Their Naming Approaches
Öz
In order to be able to identify plants in our lives, we have given each one a special name and these plant names have been transferred to generations with oral and written sources. It is known that the knowledge of identification and naming of plants are primarily based on the tendency that use of plants or avoid from harmful plants. Turkey which has hosted many civilizations has a very rich cultural heritage to benefit from the plant. The fact that a plant has many local names is an important cultural wealth in terms of language richness and this richness must be recorded and protected in scientific studies. In our work, the local names of plants and their scientific names which have traditionally been used (such as food (spices, tea, cold drinks, jams, pickles etc.), medicinal, house, dye, handy crafts, cosmetics, firewoods, animal feed or animal diseases) in Biga and its villages have been identified. In conclusion, we have recorded 283 plant names belonging to 142 wild taxa have been traditionally used in Biga. We have been determined that the most common approach to traditional naming of plants in Biga is based on similaritiy.
