Boerhavia erecta L. (Nyctaginaceae): A new record to the flora of Türkiye

Abstract

Boerhavia diffusa L. (Nyctaginaceae Juss) is reported as a new record for the flora of Türkiye. The specimen was collected from Karaağaç village, Arsuz district, Hatay. The plant was first observed and photographed on June 30, 2023, along the roadside of Uğur Mumcu Street in the Şarkonak neighborhood. Samples from a population of approximately 30 plants were collected and photographed again on January 27, 2024. The plant was identified as Boerhavia diffusa L through extensive literature review and laboratory studies.
Our investigations revealed that this species has not been previously included in publications on the flora of Türkiye. Furthermore, no genus from the Nyctaginaceae family has been reported to occur naturally in the region. This species thus represents the first naturally occurring member of the Nyctaginaceae family recorded in Türkiye.
The species was hypothesized to be introduced to the region via bird migration. Given its widespread use in alternative medicine, it is suggested that Boerhavia diffusa L. be further studied for its potential applications.
