Knowledge Levels of Health Workers Working in Primary Health Care about HIV-AIDS

Abstract

HIV AIDS has continued to be prevalent in society in recent years and is widely seen. In order to be protected against it, it is necessary to first be informed about the disease. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS among primary healthcare personnel. This study ensures that primary healthcare personnel are informed about HIV AIDS. This is a cross-sectional study. The study was administered to health personnel working in the Provincial Health Directorate of a city. A total of 205 out of 235 health personnel participated in the study (Participation rate: 87.2%). The first part consists of sociodemographic questions and 11 items; the second part measures the level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and consists of 21 items. The findings were statistically analysed using appropriate methods. The mean age of the individuals participating in the study was 37.88 ± 9.35 years; the mean years of employment was 13.33 ± 9.73 years; 70 males (34.1%) and 135 females (65.9%) were included in the study. The study included 21 doctors (10.2%), 87 nurses midwives (42.4%) and 97 other health personnel (47.6%). The mean score obtained from the AIDS knowledge scale questionnaire of the people included in the study was 15.50 ± 3.89. Among the employees included in the study, the higher scores obtained from the AIDS knowledge scale questionnaire were statistically significant (p < 0.001) compared to the scores obtained from the AIDS knowledge scale questionnaire of the people who answered ‘Have you received any training on sexual health?’ and ‘Do you have any previous knowledge about AIDS?’. The mean AIDS knowledge score of other health personnel was found to be statistically significantly lower than that of doctors (p = 0.019). This study revealed that the level of AIDS knowledge among primary health care workers was generally inadequate. It was found that the level of knowledge was directly related to having received previous training. The higher knowledge levels of doctors and nurses/midwives indicate that these individuals can assume a leadership role in targeted education campaigns. In order to effectively control AIDS in the community, eliminating the knowledge deficiencies of health workers should be a priority target.
