Recurrent Antrochoanal Polyp with Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Children: A Case Report and Approach of the Recurrence-Free Treatment Strategy

Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 1, 41 - 44, 20.04.2025

Abstract

Antrochoanal polyps (ACPs) are benign polypoid masses extending into the nasopharynx from the maxillary sinus. Antrochoanal polyps are uncommon but found to be higher in children than in adult populations. The high recur- rence of ACPs is challenging and remains an important note for clinicians to provide a recurrence-free treatment strategy. We reported a case of a 9-year-old girl presented with unilateral total nasal obstruction after having under- gone a polypectomy procedure under functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) 8 months ago with a histopatho- logical examination result of an in!ammatory polyp. Computed tomograpy imaging and nasal endoscopy revealed ACP with pansinusitis. A combined treatment strategy of a complete polypectomy and sinus restorations under FESS with antibiotic therapy, intranasal corticosteroid nasal spray, and nasal saline irrigation for the postoperative treat- ment was performed. The patient had no complaints 1 week after surgery and reported no recurrence 6 months after surgery. This case provided approaches based on our experience in the treatment strategies to prevent the recurrence of ACPs in children.
