STUDENT COMPUTER LABORATORIES WITH OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGIES

Year 2017, Volume: 7 Issue: 2, 138 - 145, 30.12.2017

Abstract

The increasing number of students, of
course, also increases their costs. In fact, most of the expenditures are
unnecessary. We can cost our laboratories, which we allocate quite a lot of
budget, cheaper.

For this purpose, we can use ARM based,
single board small computers. Their price is very low. However, they are quite
sufficient for our work. We can equip these devices with operating systems free
of charge with open source software.

We set up a test lab with 10 people for
this, for testing. 10 people were working in our normal laboratory, also. We
compared working convenience, productivity, working time and costs.

Despite the high cost in normal
laboratories, there was a more comfortable and enjoyable work environment in
our test lab. We have worked more enthusiastically in our lab with open source
software and devices. So we saw that it was more efficient.
