The Intuition of the Speechless: A Sub-Child in Bergson’s Duration—The Case of Fanny and Alexander

Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the child character Alexander in Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander through the Bergsonian concepts of duration and intuition. Alexander is not only portrayed as a silent child but also as a subaltern subject who cannot speak in the face of familial authority. Within this framework, the emotional experiences of a subaltern subject are reconfigured as a form of stream of consciousness in Bergson’s philosophy. The non-linear, affective flow of this consciousness — particularly its intuitive dimension — is significant for understanding how such perception is articulated cinematically. Consequently, the film becomes a narrative in which the aesthetic aperture of Bergsonian intuition and subalternity becomes visible. This study therefore seeks to analyze the duration embedded in Alexander’s silence and the resistance concealed within that duration, as rendered through Bergman’s poetic cinematic language.

Konuşamayanın Sezgisi: Bergson’un Süresinde Madun Bir Çocuk- Fanny ve Alexander Örneği

Abstract

Bu çalışma Ingmar Bergman’ın Fanny ve Alexander filminde yer alan çocuk karakter Alexander’ın temsilini Bergson felsefesinden süre ve sezgi kavramları bağlamında incelemeyi hedeflemektedir. Alexander karakteri sadece sessiz bir karakter olarak görülmemekte aynı zamanda ailevi otorite karşısında da konuş(a)mayan madun bir karakter olarak resmedilmektedir. Bu bağlamda Bergson’un felsefesine göre madun bir öznenin duygusal deneyimleri bilinçakışı biçiminde yeniden kurgulanır. Doğrusal olmayan bu akışın sezgiselliği yani sezgisel algının ise sinematografik açıdan nasıl ortaya çıktığı da önem arz etmektedir. Dolayısıyla film Bergson’cu felsefe çerçevesinde sezgi ve maduniyetin estetik penceresinin görüldüğü bir anlatıya dönüşür. Öyle ki bu çalışma ise Alexander karakterinin sessizliğinde yer alan süreyi ve bu sürede gizlenen direnişi Bergman’ın poetik dili aracılığıyla çözümlemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
