Development of Methodology for MBSE Modelling and RoadRunner Simulation of Autonomous Driving Scenarios: A Case Study of Lane Change on the Highway

Abstract

The advancement of autonomous driving technologies necessitates the development of robust methodologies for modelling and simulating various driving scenarios. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to model and simulate an autonomous lane change scenario on a highway using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) with Systems Modelling Language (SysML) and RoadRunner. The proposed methodology integrates MBSE principles to systematically capture the requirements, behaviors, and architectures of the autonomous system. SysML diagrams are employed to represent the structural and behavioral aspects of the lane change scenario, ensuring a clear and precise model of the system components and their interactions. The simulation of the modelled scenario is conducted using RoadRunner, a powerful tool that allows for the creation and visualization of detailed road environments and traffic conditions. By leveraging RoadRunner’s capabilities, we simulate the autonomous lane change scenario under various traffic conditions and environmental variables to evaluate the system's performance and safety. This study outlines the step-by-step process of developing the SysML model, including use case diagrams, sequence diagrams, and state machine diagrams, which collectively define the autonomous lane change behavior. The simulation results provide insights into the efficacy of the autonomous lane change system, identifying potential areas for improvement and optimization. The integration of MBSE SysML with RoadRunner simulation establishes a robust framework for validating autonomous driving scenarios, contributing to the development of safer and more reliable autonomous vehicles.
