Abstract
In this article, the short story “Saādat al-Bīk” in the book “Kāna mā Kāna” by Mikhail Nuayma (Naimy), one of the leading names in modern Arabic literature, and the movie “Zügürt Aga (1985)” directed by Nesli Çölgeçen are compared. The focus of the story "Saādat al-Bīk" and the movie "Zügürt Aga" is the significant changes in the social status of individuals as a result of the immigration phenomenon forced by socioeconomic conditions. In both narratives, certain points of conflict that occur in the axis of modernization and tradition are emphasized. In this context, the tragicomic situations of people who hold some traditional titles and social privileges, whose effectiveness has come to an end, are told in a striking way. Two different narratives, one literary and the other a visual work of art, are thematically the same; The desperation of people with titles such as “aga” and “bey”, which is on the verge of extinction, is highlighted in the social structure that is heading towards capitalization. In both works, the event which changed the life of the protagonist (the principal character) is almost identical. In fact, even though their economic situation is not good, two similar events begin a new period of their lives while they live like before. Both works are the drama of a “sheikh” and an “aga” who had to leave the life they were accustomed to in the lands they were born and grew up in and migrate to bigger centers with the hope of a better life but could not find better living conditions due to encountering a very alien environment.
