Abstract

Self-disgust is defined as feeling disgust towards one’s own behavior, body, or self. Disgusting a characteristic important for one’s self-concept is previously found to be associated with a wide range of problems including depression, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide, self-harm, and borderline personality disorder. In the present study, 74 entries about self-disgust that were posted on Sourtimes Dictionary were subjected to thematic content analysis. First, three broad themes emerged regarding the dimensions of self-disgust, the triggers of self-disgust, and behaviors, cognitions, and emotions associated with self-disgust. Dimensions include disgust towards one’s behavior, body, or self. Triggers of self-disgust consist of issues related to body, sexual behavior, eating, and one’s relationship with the self and others. Finally, it is observed that self-disgust is associated with judgmental attitudes towards the self, which might in turn lead to depressive mood, anger, and unloving oneself. These results corroborate previous findings arguing that self-disgust might be a risk factor for various psychological disorders, in which body image, sexual behaviors, interpersonal relationships, and attitudes towards oneself play a crucial role. On the other hand, some of the posts mentioned self-acceptance, to down-regulate self-disgust. Considering that self-disgust is associated with the motivation for rejection, while self-disgust might increase the risk of psychological disorders, self-acceptance might be an important buffer. Further research that focuses on self-disgust in diverse samples and in the context of various psychological disorders and psychotherapy will enhance our understanding of the effects of self-disgust and how it should be treated.

SOSYAL MEDYADA ÖZ-TİKSİNMEYLE İLGİLİ PAYLAŞIMLARIN TEMATİK İÇERİK ANALİZİ
