Abstract

Abstract

Background: The relationship between oral health and nutrition is an intriguing field of study, as well as a field of study that shows development and evolution. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and present the number of publications and citations of authors, journals, and countries, to explore hot topics prospects, and to propose future research directions on oral health and nutrition.
Methods: A bibliometric analysis was performed to provide a detailed field analysis. R-bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to conduct the bibliometric analyses.
Results: This study performed a visual analysis of 4152 published documents between January 1948 and January 2024. Publications in the last 5 years accounted for 40.9% of the total publications. While the author with the most publications is Iwasaki M., the author with the most local citations is Sheiham A. Journals with over 100 publications include BMC Oral Health, Nutrients, and Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. The thematic analysis revealed four areas of research. One of them is works describing the interrelationship between oral health and nutritional status, with a particular focus on geriatric individuals.
Conclusions: Overall, this analysis provides a detailed review of the distribution and trends of articles and reviews, suggesting that the coming years will see an exponential growth in oral health and nutrition research.
