Evaluation of Nasal Tip Projection and Rotation Following Maxillary Expansion
Abstract
Objectives: Maxillary expansion is a commonly used treatment for transverse maxillary deficiency and may affect the nasal region and surrounding soft tissues. This study aimed to compare its effects on nasolabial angle and nasal tip projection (Goode ratio) in prepubertal and pubertal individuals.
Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 68 individuals with maxillary transverse deficiency, equally divided into prepubertal and pubertal groups. Slow maxillary expansion was applied in the prepubertal group and rapid maxillary expansion in the pubertal group. Nasal height, nasal length, nasolabial angle and nasal tip projection were assessed on lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained before treatment and three months after treatment.
Results: In the prepubertal group, statistically significant increases were demonstrated in N–T and A–T measurements between T0 and T1 (p = 0.001), whereas no significant changes were detected in the Goode ratio or nasolabial angle (p = 0.637). Similarly, the pubertal group demonstrated statistically significant increases in N–T and A–T measurements (p = 0.001) with no significant changes in the Goode ratio or nasolabial angle. Intergroup comparisons revealed no statistically significant differences across the evaluated parameters (p =0.196).
Conclusion: Although maxillary expansion resulted in slight increases in nasal height and length in both prepubertal and pubertal individuals, it did not result in statistically significant alterations in the nasolabial angle and nasal tip projection. These findings suggest that maxillary expansion leads to limited and clinically insignificant alterations in nasal soft tissue morphology.
