Investigation of Sport Engagement Levels of CrossFit Athletes

Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of engagement to the sport among athletes actively performing at a competitive level in the CrossFit discipline in Turkey, as well as the socio-demographic variables influencing this commitment. The research method used a correlational survey model from quantitative research methods. The population of the study consisted of CrossFit athletes in Turkey, while the sample consisted of 211 athletes (64 women, 147 men) actively performing in the CrossFit discipline in Turkey as of 2025. The research data were collected online using the ‘‘Sport Engagement Scale’’ (SES) adapted into Turkish by Kayhan, Bardakçı, and Caz (2020), and a socio-demographic information form prepared by the researchers. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 27 program. The findings revealed that CrossFit athletes have high levels of engagement to the sport. A significant difference was observed in the “focus” sub-dimension, with male athletes scoring higher than female athletes. It has been determined that as athletes weekly training frequency increases, their level of engagement to the sport rises significantly. However, no significant difference was observed in the level of engagement to the sport based on the variables of age and CrossFit experience. In conclusion, the CrossFit discipline challenges both physical and mental endurance, and by supporting a sense of belonging, community support, and competition, it can increase levels of commitment to the sport.
