Year 2024, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 11 - 22, 05.04.2024
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10926561

Abstract

Year 2024, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 11 - 22, 05.04.2024
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10926561

Abstract

Objective: The study aims to investigate the physical and mental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnant women.
Method: The study sample of this cross-sectional type of research consisted of 183 pregnant women, followed up in 11 Family Health Centers in a city center. The data were collected using the Pregnant Women Introduction Form, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), and the Pregnancy Symptoms Inventory (PSI).
Results: The mean age of these 183 pregnant women was 26.74±4.75 years. The DASS sub-scale score averages were 20.69±7.38 for depression, 22.24.7±37 for anxiety, and 25.06±7.99 for stress; PSI sub-scales score averages were 41.73±18.57 for the frequency of symptoms experienced during pregnancy, and 61.11±10.56 for the limited daily activities due to symptoms. There was a statistically significant poor positive relationship between the frequency of symptoms and depression (r=0.307; p=0.001), and moderate relationship with anxiety (r=0.414; p=0.001) and stress (r=0.474; p=0.001). Statistically significant differences were found between pregnancy symptoms according to education, planned pregnancy status, place admitted for controls, change in feeding and sleep habits; limitation of daily activities according to family type; depression, anxiety, and stress according to pregnancy type, and planned pregnancy status; depression and anxiety according to gestational week; anxiety according to the place admitted for controls; depression and stress according to the change in sleep habits (p<0.05).
Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, pregnant women experienced moderate depression, but experienced anxiety and stress more. Moreover, they experienced pregnancy-related low-level symptoms and their daily activities were limited
