An Example of Entrepreneurship in the Ottoman Empire: Vladimir Mirmiroğlu and Olimpos Commercial and Industrial Ottoman Joint Stock Company

Abstract

In its industrialization efforts, the Ottoman Empire prioritized to corporatization initiatives. Through the enactment of various regulations, sought to remove obstacles to corporatization and offered incentives such as land grants and tax exemptions to prospective factory and company founders, thereby encouraging the consolidation of small-scale enterprises into larger corporations. This study focuses on Vladimir Mirmiroğlu, an entrepreneur who emerged during the industrialisation and corporatization endeavors of the Ottoman Empire and the activities of Ottoman Olimpos Commercial and Industrial Joint Stock Company (Olimpos Ticarî ve Sınaî Osmanlı Anonim Şirketi), one of the companies he founded, until 1922. The company’s establishment coincided with the occupation of İstanbul by the Entete Powers. Along with this company, which operated establishments such as hotels, casinos and breweries, Mirmiroğlu founded nine additional companies around the same period. However, the lack of information other than the company’s establishment documents raises suspicions. On the other hand, Mirmiroglu’s connection with all his companies was lost within a few years. The fact that his name is associated with various sensations such as embezzlement further adds to the intrigue. The primary source for this study is documents obtained from the Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of State Archives (BOA). Additionally, certain documents from the Republican Archive (BCA) have been utilized for verification purposes.
