Abstract

Osmanlı Devleti Dönemi'nde Erzurum'daki aydınlatma yöntemlerini ve dönüşümlerini inceleyen bu makale evler, dinî yapılar ve kamusal alanların aydınlatılmasına odaklanmaktadır. Çalışmada, aydınlatma araçlarının kullanımındaki değişimler, sosyal ve ekonomik etkileriyle ele alınmakta. arşivl belgeleri ve seyahatnamelere dayalı analiz ile aydınlatma araçlarının dönemsel dönüşümü sosyo-ekonomik bağlamda içinde değerlendirilmiştir. Erzurum'da aydınlatma tekniklerinin, özellikle pencereler ve iç mekan aydınlatma araçlarının dönüşümü, şehrin sosyal ve ekonomik yapısındaki değişimlerle paralellik göstermektedir. Modern aydınlatma araçlarının kullanımının artışı ve şehir aydınlatmasında elektriğe geçiş girişimlerine dair erken örnekler ihtiva eden makale Osmanlı şehircilik ve teknoloji tarihine özgün katkılar sunmakta; Erzurum'un aydınlatma tarihindeki teknolojik ve sosyal dönüşümlerine yeni bir bakış açısı verilmektedir.

Illuminating the City: Light and Lighting in Ottoman Erzurum

Abstract

In this study, the issue of the illumination of spaces in Erzurum during the Ottoman Empire is discussed. The changes and transformations of the tools and equipment used for the lighting of houses, religious buildings, streets and avenues during the period are emphasized. In particular, the structural elements used in the illumination of houses in the city are examined in detail. In this context, the change seen in the windows of the houses and the successive use of tools such as oilcloth, oiled paper and glass used in the windows are explained in the light of the documents of the relevant period and the observations of the travelers. Along with this narrative, the impact of these tools applied to windows and windows on domestic life is analyzed. The use of these tools varied periodically, and the lighting tools also differed according to the social and economic status of those who used them. In the same period, some feeble steps were taken to light the streets and avenues of the city with electricity instead of the few oil lamps used to illuminate the outdoor areas of the city. However, these steps remained fruitless.
