The Creative Destruction of the Wall: The Case of Riot Girl Attack (RGA)

Abstract

This study analyzes the graffiti scene from a gender-based perspective through the İzmir-based women’s graffiti collective Riot Girl Attack (RGA). It presents a view of anti-women publicness at the intersection of the graffiti world, dominated by male discourse, and public spaces. Within this framework, the study aims to examine RGA as a representative example of the relationships between graffiti, politics, and patriarchy. From this perspective, the research argues that graffiti is not merely an aesthetic practice but also a performative form of political action, playing a significant role in constructing feminist counter-publics. Data were collected from participants reached through the snowball sampling method using semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using descriptive and discourse analysis techniques. The study is divided into three sections: the first section presents the history of graffiti globally, in Turkey, and in İzmir; the second addresses the place of women in the graffiti world; and the third presents the literature review and research process. In the final section, the findings are discussed, interpreting gender-based phenomena in the graffiti scene in the context of RGA members’ experiences.

Duvarın Yaratıcı Yıkımı: Riot Girl Attack (RGA) Örneği

Abstract

İzmir merkezli kadın grafiti ekibi Riot Girl Attack (RGA) üzerinden grafiti sahasını cinsiyet temelli bir perspektiften analiz eden bu çalışma, erkek egemen söylemin hâkim olduğu grafiti dünyası ile kamusal alanlardaki kesişimde kadın karşıt-kamusallığının bir görünümünü sunmaktadır. Bu çerçevede grafiti-siyaset-patriyarka arasındaki ilişkileri temsil edici bir örnek olarak RGA özelinde çözümlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma bu açıdan grafitinin yalnızca estetik değil aynı zamanda performatif bir politik eylem biçimi olduğunu, bunun feminist karşıt-kamusallıkların inşasında önemli bir yer tuttuğunu iddia etmektedir. Araştırmada kartopu yöntemiyle ulaşılan katılımcılardan yarı-yapılandırılmış mülakatlarla elde edilen veriler, betimsel analiz ve söylem analizi teknikleriyle değerlendirilmiştir. Üç bölüme ayrılan çalışmanın ilk kısmında grafitinin dünyadaki, Türkiye’deki ve İzmir’deki öyküsü anlatılmıştır. İkinci kısımda grafiti dünyasında kadınların yeri ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde literatür taraması ve araştırma süreci yer almakta, son bölümde ise elde edilen bulgular değerlendirilerek RGA üyelerinin deneyimleri bağlamında grafiti dünyasında toplumsal cinsiyet temelli olgular yorumlanmaktadır.
