The Importance of Logline in Screenplay Writing: Post-2020 Turkish TV Series

Year 2024, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 104 - 124, 30.06.2024

Abstract

In this article, research on the importance of the logline (story line) in screenwriting has been conducted. The main hypothesis of the research is that a correct logline helps to identify successful films and TV series and, on the contrary, an incorrect logline leads to failure. This hypothesis was verified through examples of successful and unsuccessful series. The population of the study includes feature films and TV series that tell fictional stories. For successful TV series, the sample was selected from TV series broadcasting more than 60 episodes in 2020 and later, while for unsuccessful TV series, TV series that finalised in the first five episodes were preferred. This sample selection was made to emphasise the errors in the logline setup. In this study, where 24 series for successful series and 22 series for unsuccessful series were logline analysed, the hypothesis was confirmed. Accordingly, successful series focus on the struggle of a prominent protagonist with positive characteristics against the challenging and layered obstacles he/she faces on the way to a challenging and layered goal that suits him/her. Unsuccessful series, on the other hand, focus on the struggle of ambiguous characters with dominant negative characteristics against weak or incorrectly constructed obstacles for the sake of unconvincing goals. According to the results of this study, correctly constructed story sentences directly affect the viewing of the series.

Senaryo Yazımında Hikâye Cümlesinin (Logline) Önemi: 2020 Sonrası Türk TV Dizileri

Year 2024, Volume: 4 Issue: 1, 104 - 124, 30.06.2024
