Comparison of Alternative Maintenance and Repair Methods Within the Scope of Industry 5.0 Using SMR Sustainability Assessment Method

Abstract

The study introduces a new evaluation method developed within the scope of Industry 5.0. The new method, called Sustainability in Maintenance and Repair (SMR), aims to measure the sustainability value of a repair task in terms of environmental, economic, time management, and social aspects. Within the research, an example of a fault was considered and examined. The different values arising from repairing the fault using two different repair methods were compared. The first scenario involves repair by the technical service, while the other scenario involves the end-user repairing the fault by receiving support from technicians using Augmented Reality (AR). During the evaluation process, first, the weight values of the main sustainability criteria (emission, energy consumption, social/occupational safety, and cost/time) were determined. Data related to the example was collected using a question-and-answer method. Evaluations were conducted according to the criteria in light of this data. Subsequently, an SMR score ranging between 0–100 was calculated for each maintenance and repair scenario. As a result, the maintenance method performed by the end-user achieved an "Excellent Sustainability" level with a numerical value of 90.9, whereas the traditional technical service maintenance method remained at the "Low Sustainability" level with a score of 37.55. Thus, it was found that AR-supported maintenance significantly contributes to sustainability.
