GMJ-TR Ethical Principles and Publication Policy
GMJ-TR recognizes the highest international standards of publication ethics. It adopts the ethical publishing principles recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). The principles expressed under the title “Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing” are available at the link below.
The articles submitted to the journal must not have been published before and must not have been taken to the evaluation process and publication stage anywhere else.
The submitted manuscripts should fit the purpose and scope of the journal. Original, previously unpublished manuscripts or manuscripts that are not under evaluation in another journal simultaneously and whose content and submission have been approved by each author are accepted for evaluation. Of the articles derived from conference/symposium/congress presentations, only those that have been orally presented and/or published as an abstract can be accepted for evaluation. Articles derived from a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation are expected to have a single author.
In the studies submitted to the journal for publication, the name of any of the authors cannot be deleted from the masthead, a new name cannot be added to the masthead, and the order of authors cannot be changed without the written permission of all the authors.
Plagiarism, duplication, false authorship, slicing and dicing, copyright infringement, and concealment of conflict of interest are considered unethical behaviors. Any studies that do not comply with accepted ethical standards are removed from publication. The publication of manuscripts detected to include unlawful and/or unethical content is similarly terminated.
Each submitted manuscript is evaluated by one of the editors and at least two reviewers in accordance with the double-blind review process. The editors or reviewer(s) may request corrections and changes for the submitted manuscripts. The author(s) fulfill these requests if they find them appropriate. The author(s) are expected to explain why they do not meet the requests that they consider inappropriate. The author(s) have the right to withdraw their work at any stage of the publication process.
Responsibilities of the author(s)
The author(s) are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts comply with scientific and ethical rules.
The author(s) are responsible for not committing ethical violations such as plagiarism, duplication, false authorship, failure to cite references, article slicing and dicing, and failure to mention the names of research grants and support institutions. The author(s) must ensure that the manuscript is original, has not been previously published elsewhere, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere in another language. Manuscripts that do not comply with ethical standards cannot be published. This includes manuscripts that contain ethical improprieties detected after publication.
All copyrighted material should be used with permission and acknowledgment. The studies of other authors, contributors, or sources should be used appropriately and cited in the references. The author(s) must document the usage rights of the data they employ in their studies, the necessary permissions associated with it, and the consent of the participants on whom they conducted research, to be made available upon request.
When submitting a manuscript of any type or format, the author(s) are responsible for disclosing any financial and personal relationships that may bias or favor the study. In this context, the author(s) must sign the Copyright Agreement Form and upload it to the system when submitting the manuscript.
If more than one author is contributing to the study, the author ranking submitted should be a joint decision of the authors. All authors must indicate their name ranking on the Copyright Agreement Form and declare any possible conflict of interest with the author contribution categories on the Author Form.
It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure to include only those who have active contributions to the manuscript among the authors, to exclude those who do not have active contributions, and to justify any change in the author ranking requested during the evaluation process of the manuscript. The author(s) should be able to provide explanations on all these issues to the journal editor, if deemed necessary by the editors.
All authors must declare any potential or apparent conflicts of interest, including funding and grants received. Financial relationships, conflicts of interest, and competition of interest that have the potential to influence the research results or scientific evaluation should be declared.
In case a conflict of interest, ethical violation, or error is detected during the review process or in a published study, the author(s) should share the issue with the editors and fulfill the necessary responsibility for correction or withdrawal.
The author(s) should avoid the use of discriminatory language. GMJ-TR reserves the right to reject manuscripts with such language without initiating the review process.
The author(s) have the responsibility to edit and submit the article in accordance with the academic writing rules specified by GMJ-TR.
Ethics committee approval must be obtained for any studies in which humans or animals are used as subjects or data sources and must be uploaded to the system during article submission. Articles without ethics committee approval will not be evaluated.
Editorial responsibilities
The editors appoint associate editors for the manuscripts submitted to the journal. The associate editors present their opinion on whether the article should be included in the reviewing process by considering the Editorial Preliminary Evaluation Form. The associate editor may request corrections from the author(s) at the editorial evaluation stage or recommend that the editors reject the article without being included in the reviewing process.
The editors and associate editors are obliged to carry out the evaluation and publication process of each manuscript submitted to the journal within the framework of GMJ-TR Ethical Principles and Publication Policy. By adopting the principle of impartiality, they should evaluate each article independently, regardless of the gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, political opinion, religious belief, nationality, seniority, and institutional affiliations of the author(s). They should follow the principle of quality publishing instead of seeking any personal gain and interest and consider that GMJ-TR maintains its publishing activities in accordance with scientific ethics.
The editors are responsible for promoting accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness throughout the entire publication process. Editorial decisions are based on scientific merit.
The editors and associate editors should ensure that each submitted manuscript undergoes a fair double-blind peer review process. They should guarantee the anonymity of the author(s) and reviewers during the peer review process.
In case of a “publishable” or “unpublishable” recommendation from the reviewers for the manuscript under review, the editors should seek a third reviewer's assessment.
The editors have full authority to appoint reviewers. The editors are responsible for making the final decision to accept or reject each manuscript for publication and are accountable for each publication. The editors may consult with reviewers or editorial board members in their final decisions regarding the publication process.
The editors are obliged to take the necessary measures in case of inappropriate situations, such as violations of intellectual property rights, actions incompatible with scientific ethics, and plagiarism during the publication process. The plagiarism reports of the studies are obtained through the iThenticate Program and the similarity rate must be less than 15% for publication.
The editors should not evaluate the article if the author of the submitted article is a member of the journal’s boards. At least one article reviewer should be appointed from outside Yeditepe University Faculty of Communication.
Responsibilities of referees
GMJ-TR uses a double-blind peer review system, and reviewers are expected to adopt this system and fulfill the requirements. The reviewer should maintain confidentiality in the review process.
When a review proposal is submitted, the reviewer should respond positively or negatively within the notified time period and take care to submit the manuscript within the specified deadlines.
If there is any conflict of interest or community of interest regarding the article, the reviewer should not accept the review offer.
If the reviewers feel that the article is irrelevant to their area of expertise or that they are not able to provide a timely response, they should inform the editors that they will not be involved in the evaluation process.
The reviewer should carry out the evaluation by taking into consideration the ethical principles and editorial policy of GMJ-TR.
If the reviewers detect any actual or potential ethical impropriety (plagiarism, multiple publications, cases of simultaneous submission, copyright infringement, etc.) in the article they evaluate, they should inform the journal editors.
The reviewers should be careful to evaluate the article in a fair and impartial manner with constructive criticism, avoiding personal comments, insults, and offensive expressions.
The reviewers should inform the editors if they realize that a conflict of interest that did not exist at the time of acceptance has emerged during the evaluation process.
The reviewers should explain their recommendations for the reviewed article with scientific justifications.
The reviewers should maintain the confidentiality of the evaluation process after the evaluation.
Responsibilities of the publisher

The publisher is obliged to take the necessary steps to clarify the situation in cases of suspected violations of scientific publication ethics, such as misconduct, plagiarism, conflict of interest, copyright violations, and text recycling.

Geographical diversity and institutional distribution are taken into consideration in the composition of the editorial board and it is ensured that the share of the members from the same institution is not more than one-third of the editorial board.
The editorial board meets twice a year. The editorial board members accept the journal's editorial ethics principles and policies and evaluate issues related to these principles and policies.
Editorial board members propose members for the advisory board of the journal. They make evaluations and suggestions to increase the journal's national and international recognition and scientific quality.
In cases where there is a suspicion of ethical impropriety and violation in the evaluation, publication, and post-publication processes of articles, they should inform the editorial team to clarify the situation.

Plagiarism and similar ethical violations are considered unacceptable by GMJ-TR, and it is primarily the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that such violations are not present in the submitted manuscripts. Each manuscript submitted to GMJ-TR is checked for similarity before being included in the evaluation process. The author(s) will be notified if plagiarism is detected. If necessary, the editors may subject the manuscript to plagiarism check at various stages of the evaluation or publication process. High similarity rates may cause a study to be rejected before or even after acceptance. The similarity rate must be less than 15% for a study to be published. In addition, after the similarity check, the editors may request changes from the author(s) if deemed necessary.
Double-Blind Peer Review Process
After the plagiarism check, eligible manuscripts are evaluated by the editors in terms of originality, methodology, importance of the subject matter, and compatibility with the scope of the journal. The editors submit manuscripts that comply with the formal principles to the evaluation of at least two reviewers from Turkey and/or abroad and ensure that they undergo a fair double-blind peer review. The editors approve the publication of the manuscript after the author(s) make the changes deemed necessary by the reviewers.
