Subcutaneous fat necrosis in a newborn with hypoxia and meconium aspiration syndrome

Abstract

Subcutaneous fat necrosis is a rare inflammatory disorder of the adipose tissue, appears with nodules and plaques. Subcutaneous fat necrosis is mostly seen in term and post-term newborns during the first weeks of life. Laboratory investigation of the male newborn who was referred to our hospital in postnatal 15 hours due to birth hypoxia and meconium aspiration syndrome showed hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia and thrombocytopenia. On the fourth day of life, the skin lesions were seen on the baby’s back and upper extremities compatible with subcutaneous fat necrosis. We think that hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia and thrombocytopenia might be related with hypoxia. Although subcutaneous fat necrosis is a self-healing disorder, close monitoring of the patients is important due to complications.

Hipoksik doğum ve mekonyum aspirasyon sendromu görülen bir yenidoğanda subkutan yağ nekrozu

Abstract

Subkutan yağ nekrozu nadir görülen, eritematöz nodül ve plaklarla seyreden adipoz dokunun inflamatuvar bir hastalığıdır. Subkutan yağ nekrozu sıklıkla zamanında  ve zamanından sonra doğmuş bebeklerde yaşamın ilk haftalarında görülmektedir. Hipoksik doğum ve mekonyum aspirasyon sendromu nedeni ile postnatal 15. saatinde hastanemize gönderilen erkek bebekte ilk başvuruda hipokalsemi, hipoglisemi ve trombositopeni mevcuttu. Dört günlükken sırtta ve kollarda subkutan yağ nekrozu ile uyumlu lezyonları gelişti, hastada görülen hipoglisemi, hipokalsemi ve trombositopeninin hipoksi ile ilişkili olduğu düşünüldü. Subkutan yağ nekrozu genellikle kendiliğinden iyileşen bir durum olmasına rağmen, komplikasyonları açısından yakın izlemi önemlidir.
