Year 2020, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 49 - 56, 15.06.2020

Abstract

Review: The Effects of Family of Origin Attitudes on Psychopathology

Year 2020, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 49 - 56, 15.06.2020

Abstract

This study reviews the studies that examine the effects of family of origin on the psychopathology of adult children. The pathologies that are reviewed are depression and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, substance related disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Along with the effects of family of origin attitudes and behaviors, parent-child relations, their interactions, affective ties, functionality of family of origin, and family structure are examined. The studies on the effects of psychopathologies of parents in terms of genetic predisposition are not subject of this review. While most of the studies that are examined are based on the data of retrospective and prospective cohort studies, in most of them, the effects of family of origin attitudes and other explained variables on psychopathology of adolescent and adult children are found to be significant.
