Climate-Based Architectural Assessment: The Sustainability of Traditional Antioch Houses through Mahoney Tables

Abstract

Traditional buildings serve as a guide for sustainable building design. This study aims to determine the sustainable design features of traditional Antioch houses, raise awareness for their preservation, and create a roadmap for modern building designs. To achieve this, necessary literature reviews and field studies were conducted based on the building design criteria of the Mahoney tables. The findings were then compared with Mahoney's recommendations. The results indicate that traditional Antioch houses align closely with Mahoney's design recommendations across several aspects. These include building layouts, building envelopes, space orientations, protection from rain, and the characteristics of openings. Furthermore, the passive design criteria of traditional Antioch houses offer valuable guidance for sustainable architecture. Key elements of this guidance include settlement layout, spacing between buildings, wall and roof systems, materials used, spatial orientation, courtyard systems, and the size, location, and protection of openings. Finally, following the severe damage and destruction inflicted on both modern and traditional architecture in Antioch by the 2023 earthquakes, this study gains heightened originality. It provides a crucial roadmap for sustainable building designs in similar climatic regions.
