Facade Insulation against Urban Noise: A Convention Center Example
Abstract
While urbanisation and technological advancements improve quality of life, they also exacerbate the problem of environmental noise. Noise pollution can cause temporary or permanent damage to human health, leading to sleep disorders, cardiovascular problems and negative impacts on cognitive development. Therefore, it is critically important to evaluate the acoustic performance of buildings for sustainable and healthy urbanisation. One of the fundamental elements in protecting buildings against external noise is façade design. The choice of materials for façade elements, the window-to-wall ratio and detailed solutions all play a decisive role in determining interior acoustic comfort. This study examines the acoustic performance of the Congress and Arts Centre's façades in relation to road traffic noise. First, the study reviews literature on noise control in building facades, and then conducts an analysis in light of Turkish regulations and international standards. The building elements used in the façades were analysed using the Insul 9.3 simulation programme, and the obtained data were compared with the limit values specified in the 'Regulation on the Protection of Buildings Against Noise'. The results of the analysis show that the Congress Center's current facade performance generally meets regulatory criteria. However, the type of glass used and the window-to-wall ratio were found to limit performance. Traffic noise was found to be particularly effective on the north and west façades, and improvements were suggested, such as increasing the glass thickness and improving the window details. Furthermore, planting trees in front of the façade was considered a solution that could contribute positively in terms of both aesthetics and acoustics. The study emphasises the importance of considering façade acoustics in the early stages of building design. It concludes that economical and sustainable solutions can be achieved by selecting appropriate façade materials and integrating acoustic criteria into the design. In this context, the research makes a practical contribution to architecture and acoustics by revealing the effects of façade design on noise control in high-traffic buildings, such as convention centres.
