Denizin Saraylıları: Bahriye'de Osmanlı Şehzadeleri

The process of radical change in the state administration that began in 1839 after the declaration of the Tanzimat Edict also affected the members of the Ottoman dynasty. The princes started to go to public schools as well as taking lessons from private teachers. Over time, the princes assummed various tasks similar to those in the European dynasties and became public figures. The navy also made an important contribution to this recognition. As a matter of fact, since the Tanzimat and especially after the declaration of the second constitutionalism in 1908, the princes appointed to the navy were noteworthy among those assigned as honorary or active duty in the army. The main subject of this article is the princes in the navy which is not well-known. Some of the princes who received their initial education from private teachers in the palace preferred the Military Academy and the Naval Academy with their own preferences or by the decision of the dynasty. In this study, the life stories and activities of the princes who were enrolled in the Naval Academy or registered to the navy in childhood by the order of the sultan will be presented with archival documents. Thus, the role of some of the late Ottoman princes in social life will be emphasized.
