Patient’s Experiences and Difficulties at Home Following Day Surgery

Abstract

Objective: The main aim of this study was to determine patients’ problems and self management at home after day case procedures. Method: This descriptive study was performed in the day surgery unit of Foundation University in a city located Central Anatolia Region, from March 2006 to April 2007 and have reached 53 patients. Data were collected via questionnaire from 53 patients who volunteered to participate in this study and patients were monitored by a nurse who work at unite, via a follow-up form until discharging; researchers called the patients 24 hours, 72 hours and 7-10 days after discharging and recorded on follow-up form. Results: Mean age of the patients was 50.1; of them 50.9 % were women. Following discharge in first 24 hours 73.6 % of them had pain, 60.4 % fatigue and 20.8 % reported insomnia. Between 7-10 days, all of these problems resolved in majority of the patients except fatigue. Overall more than half of the patients did not have difficulties in performing daily activities; however they had some difficulties in walking, step-up and dressing and less performed activities were house work, cooking and shopping. Conclusion: Results of this study can be taken as a reference when planning patient discharge and with careful planning patient would have comfortable in this period after day surgery. Although patients reported less difficulty in performing daily activities in later stage, fatigue should be considered as an impacting factor.

GÜNÜBİRLİK CERRAHİYİ TAKİBEN HASTALARIN EV ORTAMINDAKİ DENEYİM VE GÜÇLÜKLERİ

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, günübirlik cerrahi işlem sonrası evde hastaların yaşadıkları güçlükler ve bu güçlükleri yönetme durumlarının belirlenmesidir. Yöntem: Bu çalışma İç Anadolu Bölgesi’nde bir ilde yer alan vakıf üniversitesine bağlı bir hastanenin günübirlik cerrahi ünitesinde Mart 2006 ve Nisan 2007 yılları arasında gerçekleştirilmiş, tanımlayıcı türden bir çalışmadır. Çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden toplam 53 hastadan bir soru formu aracılığı ile veriler toplanmış ve hastalar taburcu olana kadar ünitede çalışan bir hemşire tarafından izlem formu aracılığı ile takip edilmiştir. Taburculuk sonrası ise hastalar 24. ve 72. saatler ve 7-10.günlerde telefon ile aranmış ve yaşadıkları güçlükler bir izlem formuna kaydedilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan hastaların yaş ortalaması 50.1 olup %50.9’u kadındır. Taburculuk sonrası ilk 24 saatte hastaların %73.6’sı ağrı, %60.4’ü yorgunluk ve %20.8’i uykusuzluk tanımlamışlardır. Hastaların tamamına yakınında, yorgunluk dışında diğer sorunlar 7-10. günlerde ortadan kalkmıştır. Hastaların yarısından çoğunun genel olarak günlük yaşam aktivitelerini gerçekleştirmekte zorlanmadıkları; yürüme, merdiven çıkma ve giyinme gibi aktivitelerde zorlanmalarına rağmen yaptıkları; en az gerçekleştirilen aktivitelerin ise ev işleri, yemek ve alışveriş olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Taburculuk sonrası hastanın bakım ve takibinin bu çalışmanın sonuçları dikkate alınarak planlanmasıyla hastanın bu dönemi daha rahat atlatması sağlanabilir. Daha geç dönemde ise günlük yaşam aktivitelerini yerine getirmede hastaların daha az zorlandıkları belirlenmekle birlikte yorgunluk faktörünün dikkate alınması önerilebilir
