Assessment of Fine Particulate Matter PM2.5 and PM10.0 Over Selected Locations in Osun State, Nigeria

Abstract

Particulate matter (PM), originating from natural and anthropogenic sources, is a significant air pollutant affecting environmental and public health. This study evaluates the concentration of fine particulate matter across selected locations in Osun State, Nigeria, where economic activities are prevalent. A "TEMTOP" air quality monitoring device was employed to collect data on PM concentrations, temperature, and humidity during the wet and dry seasons of 2023. The findings indicate that the daily mean concentrations of PM in the dry season exceeded WHO/US EPA guidelines, reaching 35 μg/m³ and 150 μg/m³, respectively. In the wet season, elevated PM levels were observed in Ifon (194.5 μg/m³ and 326.7 μg/m³), whereas other locations recorded lower values. The model fit performed better during the wet season but was weaker in the dry season. Stakeholder awareness and policy enforcement are recommended to mitigate air pollution in the region.
