Assessment of The Reactions of Some Wild Tomato Accessions to Pseudocercospora fuligena

Abstract

Türkiye is one of the leading countries in both tomato production and exports. Many fungi, bacteria, and viruses can cause yield and quality losses in tomato production. One of these, Pseudocercospora fuligena, a polycyclic foliar fungal pathogen, can cause yield losses ranging from 31.3% to 86%. There are currently no commercial tomato varieties carrying resistance genes against this pathogen. Therefore, there is a need for research to identify pathogen-resistant wild tomato accessions that can be used in breeding programs. In this study, pathogenicity studies were carried out with Pseudocercospora fuligena isolates MU12, MU24, MU28 and MU30 using Solanum pimpinellifolium, S. peruvianum, S. neorickii, S. chmielewskii, S. habrochaites wild tomato accessions obtained from the Czech Republic Gene Bank. Accessions 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8 (two accessions of S. pimpinellifolium, and one accession each of S. peruvianum, S. chmielewskii, and S. habrochaites) were susceptible to all isolates. Accessions 2 and 3 (S. peruvianum and S. neorickii) showed different reactions depending on the isolates. Accession 6 of S. habrochaites was resistant to all isolates used in the pathogenicity test. This accession might be used for the development of new resistant tomato varieties to the pathogen.
