Abstract

Depresyon, birden fazla etkene bağlı olarak gelişip, bireylerin yaşam kalitesini önemli ölçüde etkileyen ve erken ölümle ilişkilendirilen ruhsal bir bozukluktur. Çağımızın en sık görülen hastalıklardan biri olan depresyonun birçok hastalıkla beraber seyrettiği, özellikle de yaygın olarak görülen kronik inflamatuvar hastalıklarla ilişkili olabileceğine dair birçok çalışma mevcuttur. Depresyon sırasında stres hormonları, sitokinler ve C-reaktif protein gibi biyokimyasal değerlerin değişimi, depresyon ile inflamatuvar yolaklar arasında bir ilişkinin varlığına işaret etmektedir. Yapılan klinik araştırmalarda, inflamasyon tedavisinde kullanılan bazı ilaçlar, akut depresif hastalarda tek başına ya da antidepresan tedaviye ilave olarak kullanıldığında, depresyon belirtilerinde azalma görülmüştür. Fakat bu çalışmaların büyük bir çoğunluğu akut depresyon vakalarında yapıldığından, kronik depresyon vakalarında antiinflamatuvarların kullanımına yönelik yeterli veri bulunmamaktadır. Depresyon ve inflamasyon arasındaki ilişki ile alakalı elde edilen deneysel ve klinik veriler, yeni ilaç geliştirilebilmesi ve her iki durumun patofizyolojik yolağının aydınlatılması açısından önem taşımaktadır. Bu derlemenin amacı, proinflamatuvar sitokinler ve depresyon arasındaki ilişkiyi literatürdeki güncel veriler ışığında değerlendirmektir.

Inflammation and Depression

Abstract

Depression is a mental disorder affects individuals’ quality of life which is depended on multiple factors and associated with early death. It is known that depression is one of the most common disease of the era and progressing with many diseases concomitantly, especially with chronical inflammatory disorders. Alterations in biochemical markers such as stress hormones, cytokines, C-reactive protein, etc. during depression indicate the existence of a relationship between depression and inflammatory pathways. In the clinical studies, some drugs used in the treatment of inflammation reported to lead to an improvement of depression symptoms in acute depressive patients when used alone or concomitant with the antidepressant treatment. However, a large majority of the studies in the literature has been based on the acute cases of depression. Therefore, there is no enough data for the clinical use of anti-inflammatory drugs in chronic depression treatment. Experimental and clinical data about the relationship between depression and inflammation are important in terms of development of new drugs and may be promising for the elucidation of the pathophysiological pathway in both cases. This review aims to evaluate the relationship between proinflammatory cytokines and depression by means of the current studies in literature.
