Evaluation of Sexual Functions in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes
Abstract
Objective: Sexual dysfunction is one of the most common complications observed in individuals with type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate sexual function in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between May and June 2014 with 280 individuals with type 2 diabetes who visited a diabetes outpatient clinic. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, internal consistency analysis, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, Chi-square tests, and Fisher's Exact tests, with a statistical significance level set at p<0.05.
Results: Among female participants, 84.4% were found to have sexual dysfunction, with the most affected domains being sexual desire (73.8%) and arousal (48.9%). Among male participants, 90.6% had erectile dysfunction (ED), with the most affected domains being relationship satisfaction (76.3%) and orgasmic function (25.2%). The majority of males with ED exhibited moderate (55.4%) and mild (33.8%) levels of dysfunction. A statistically significant association was found between sexual dysfunction and hypertension (p = 0.014) and genital itching (p = 0.023) in females. In males, neurological problems (p = 0.007) and blood glucose levels (p = 0.026) were significantly associated with ED.
Conclusion: High rates of sexual dysfunction were observed in both male and female individuals with type 2 diabetes. Routine assessment of sexual function, implementation of appropriate nursing interventions, organization of educational programs, and referrals to specialized healthcare units are recommended. Additionally, providing psychological counseling services targeting sexual dysfunction is deemed necessary.
