Abstract
Objectives: The contralateral broadband noise stimulates the medial olivocochlear neurons and causes an inhibitory effect on the electromotility of the ipsilateral outer hair cells, resulting in a reduction in transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) amplitudes and is called TEOAE contralateral suppression. The aim of in our study was to investigate the short-term test-retest reliability of TEOAE contralateral suppression in women.
Materials and Methods: A total of 30 female with normal hearing (aged 18-40 years) participated ın the study. Suppressed and unsuppressed TEOAE measurements were applied to each individual in test-retest conditions at frequencies between 1000 Hz and 4000 Hz, and the amount of suppression was calculated.
Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of the right and left ear TEOAE suppression amount obtained at all frequencies (p<0.05). It was observed that the amount of suppression of the right ear was lower than the amount of suppression of the left ear. No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of all suppression amounts in the test-retest conditions measured at frequencies between 1000 Hz and 4000 Hz in the right and left ears. Although the reproducibility of short-term TEOAE suppression amounts varies according to the frequencies, good reproducibility was found at 1500 Hz, 2000 Hz and 3000 Hz in the right and left ears of women.
Conclusion: The study demonstrated that short-term TEOAE suppression measurements are reliable, but more research is needed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of test-retest measurements of TEOAE suppression in men and women.
