Exploring the Paradox of Empowerment and Employment: A Gender and development Perspective from Bangladesh

Abstract

This research explores the paradox of women’s empowerment in Bangladeshi garment industry and microfinance programs within a neoliberal framework. While undeniable progress has been made in terms of increased female employment and financial inclusion, this paper argues that challenges persist due to ingrained gender dynamics and uneven and combined development engaged in the neoliberal setting. Focusing on the post-2000 era, it examines how neoliberal policies create limitations for employed women. By analyzing the existing literature, the paper highlights the dual potential of both the garment industry and microfinance programs. The garment industry offers employment opportunities and economic agency, yet often reinforces low wages and limited skills development for women. Similarly, microfinance programs provide financial autonomy but many lead to indebtedness and perpetuate socio-economic vulnerabilities. Overall, the research demonstrates that increased employment and access to financial tools may not always lead to empowerment for Bangladeshi women. Through a comprehensive approach, the paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between these sectors and their impact on the empowerment of Bangladeshi women.
