Abstract

The child’s illness and the consequent hospitalization of a caregiver involve undesirable and unpleasant experiences for the child and their parents. The present study aims to examine the anxiety levels of mothers of children who are hospitalized for acute and chronic disorders, as well as their status of coping with stress and the factors that affect it. The research was conducted with 316 mothers whose children were hospitalized due to acute and chronic diseases between March 2019 and February 2020. “The Parent and Child Information Form,” “State and Trait Anxiety Scale,” and “Styles of Coping with Stress Scale” were used to collect data. A statistically significant difference was found between the mothers' educational background employment status, and psychological support status and the subdimensions of the “Styles of Coping with Stress Scale” (p<0.05). The state anxiety sub-dimension scores of the mothers of children who were not exposed to painful processes were higher than those of the mothers of children who were regularly exposed to such procedures, and there was a statistically significant difference between the two (p=0.033). No statistically significant difference was found between the mothers whose children were hospitalized with diagnoses of acute and chronic diseases in terms of the sub-dimensions of the “Styles of Coping with Stress Scale" and the “State-Trait Anxiety Scale,”(p>0.05). The mothers’ educational background number of children, employment, involvement in care, status of living in an extended family, level of knowledge regarding the child’s disease and receiving psychological support positively affect their style of coping with stress.

Akut ve Kronik Hastalık Nedeniyle Hastaneye Yatan Çocukların Annelerinin Anksiyete Düzeyleri ve Stresle Başa Çıkma Durumlarının İncelenmesi
