Abstract

Abstract
Objective: Aging process causes degenerative neuroplastic changes of brain which leads to slowing of reflexes to an auditory and visual stimuli. The purpose of this study is to assess the reflex reaction time (RRT) delay between two groups of individuals with different ages to detect the RRT delay for each group. Material and Methods: Two groups of thirties, group 1 and 2 with age ranges of (19-29 years and 30-58 years) respectively. To simulate a vehicle driving condition, the participants were set on a seat with a wheel in their hands, contains an alarm button and a screen infront of the participants. Test was submitted for five minutes during which a constant visual stimulus was presented for three times throughout the test period. participants were asked to press the button as soon as they recognize the visual stimulus. The average values of the RRT delay were recorded for each group. Results: The average values of the RRT delay in three visual stimuli appearance for all participants in group (1) and group two were (0.38 ± 0.027 and 0.43 ± 0.033 seconds) respectively. There was a statistical significance between the two groups with p value = 0.04. Conclusion: Aging process predisposes to road traffic accidents due to the associated significant delay of the RRT. Such a test should be included in the driving license proficiency exams, especially for older individual to exclude any delay in the RRT which may lead to more road traffic accidents.
