Abstract
A symbol is a concrete and recognizable sign that stands for a thought or object. But the symbol is not just a sign, it is the reflection of what it replaces in the human mind. The individual carries events, objects and ideas in the imaginary dimension to the concrete plane through symbols and thus makes them understandable. Symbols, which have a wide range of influence, are also used by religions and beliefs. From past to present, many people have used symbols in various ways as a means to reach the knowledge of the sacred. Water is an element that has always preserved its importance in human life since ancient times. The need for water for living things to survive has carried it to a higher level in the human mind. Known as the source of life, the symbol of purity and cleanliness in many beliefs and cultures, water has taken its place in Turkish culture as an inspiration for creation alongside these known meanings. Having these meanings in Turkish culture, water, with the acceptance of Islam, turned into a panacea, the elixir of immortality, adam’s ale. In this study, water symbolism in Alewi belief and culture, whose source is mostly Central Asian Turkish culture and belief, has been discussed and thus the similarities between the two cultures have been tried to be revealed.
