Abstract

ESOPHAGEAL LEIOMYOMA: CASE REPORT

Year 2016, Volume: 30 Issue: 1, 49 - 52, 01.05.2016

Abstract

Leiomyomas, submucosal masses commonly encountered as solitary lesions with regular margins located in the proximal one third of the esophagus, are the most common benign tumors of the esophagus. Widely accepted treatment of asymptomatic lesion is surgical enucleation unless the slow growing tumor enlarges enough to compress the neighboring intramural tissues or occlude the lumen. A 67-year-old male patient presented with the complaint of pain while swallowing solid food for two years, and the clinical and radiological studies revealed a submucosal lesion from 33 cm to 37 cm in esophagus. Pathological examination of a 7- cm tumor with well-defined margins which was surgically enucleated was reported as gastrointestinal stromal tumor-leiomyoma. Due to rare occurrence of the lesion, testing and treatment steps were discussed and presented together with the current literature.
