Examining Secondary School Students’ Attitudes Towards Science based on Various Variables (Çanakkale Sample)
ABSTRACT
The research aims to find out how the attitudes of secondary school (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade) students towards the course of Science are influenced by their grades, their attendance at a kindergarten or nursery school, gender, the number of siblings, and their father's and mother's occupation, their relation to the environment and frequency of visit to natural areas and to determine the level of their attitudes towards the course of Science. The research was carried out by means of descriptive survey model. Anova and t-test were used in the data analysis. It can concluded that the factor of gender does not have an effect on the attitude of the students towards the course of Science. Their attendance at a kindergarten or nursery school does not affect their attitude towards the course of Science. Though the attitude of the secondary school (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade) students with 1 and 2 siblings towards the course of Science was more positive than that of the students with 5 siblings, the difference between them was not statistically significant. The secondary school (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade) students whose mothers are state officials had a higher attitude towards the course of Science than that of the students whose mothers work in private sector, which was not a statistically significant difference. Moreover, there was not a significant difference between the attitudes of the secondary school (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade) students towards the course of Science and the occupation of their fathers.
