Abstract

University science and innovation parks play a prominent role in promoting innovation and driving economic development, particularly in the continuously evolving automotive industry. The aim of this study is to explore the key conditions necessary for the establishment and successful operation of a start-up and incubation programme within a university science park environment, with a specific focus on the automotive sector. The analysis identifies four interrelated pillars that enable effective implementation: a strong strategic foundation aligned with the university’s long-term objectives; an operational framework ensuring expert resources, sustainable funding, and clear entry criteria; strategic partnerships linking academic, industrial, and financial stakeholders; and a feedback-driven process that supports continuous adaptation to market and technological change. This integrated approach highlights the importance of aligning institutional strategy with entrepreneurial practice while ensuring the long-term viability of the incubation model. Special attention is given to the unique infrastructure and expertise required in the automotive field, such as the opportunities provided by the ZalaZONE science park. Strategic planning and programme structuring are supported by the Business Model Canvas, extended with elements that address social and environmental considerations. By identifying strategic gaps and promoting sustainability, this framework strengthens both practical application and long-term impact.Overall, the study provides practical guidance on how to design and implement a university incubation program that fosters technological innovation, supports early-stage ventures, contributes to job creation, and promotes sustainable mobility.
