A Comparative Study of ABS and EBS Brake System on Double Decker Inter City Bus

Abstract

Ensuring safe braking performance in heavy duty vehicles is critical for passenger safety and overall traffic safety. This study presents a comparative analysis of Anti lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Braking System (EBS) applied to a double decker intercity bus based on experimental data obtained from full scale vehicle tests. The tests were conducted under both laden and unladen conditions at different vehicle speeds in accordance with the requirements of the ECE R13.11 braking type approval regulation [1]. The evaluation focuses on braking deceleration performance and adhesion utilization under both normal and low friction (low ) road conditions. The experimental results show that while ABS and EBS exhibit similar braking performance under unladen conditions, significant differences arise under fully laden conditions. Under these conditions, the EBS system provides substantially higher braking deceleration values compared to ABS. Furthermore, under low friction conditions, EBS achieves higher braking deceleration and better adhesion utilization compared to ABS, indicating more effective use of available tire road friction. The results also demonstrate that EBS is less sensitive to load variations and provides more stable braking performance. These findings confirm that EBS offers superior braking efficiency, stability, and consistency for double decker passenger buses, particularly under high load and low friction conditions.
