The Sample Of A City Symbol’s Integration Into Its Cultural Economics: Izmit And Turkish Fairy Floss

Abstract

It wouldn’t be wrong to associate the convergence of the terms ‘culture’ and ‘economics’ with capitalism resulting from the Industrial Revolution that started in the United Kingdom and spread all over Europe in 18th and 19th centuries. Yet, as it turned 21st century, culture formed one of the latest resources the economics would feed on. This led to the formation of concepts such as ‘cultural industry’ and ‘cultural economics’. Cultural industry and cultural economics constitute the approaches for the protection and as a result, one of the studies aimed to be carried out; as it was put emphasis on in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) and Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), both signed by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). If Izmit is to be linked to an urban symbol within the context of cultural economics, this will surely be possible with a product associated with the city; this being ‘Turkish fairy floss’. The most apparent symbol of the city, ‘Turkish fairy floss’, has been a product that continues existing in the geography of Izmit for long years. Referring to Izmit, it finds market and display area domestically and abroad. Turkish fairy floss, the vision of Izmit, advertises the city nationally and internationally. ‘Urban symbols’ are means of advertisement of the cities as well, mediating the city with ad operations that spread over distances of kilometers thereby. In this study, symbolic products’ contribution to their cities’ urban economics and city life will be discussed through samples of Izmit and Turkish fairy floss. This will surely be handled within the context of relationship between culture and economics.

Kent İmgesinin Kültür Ekonomisine Dönüşüm Örneği: İzmit ve Pişmaniye

Abstract

‘Kültür’ ve ‘ekonomi’ terimlerinin yan yana gelişini 18. ve 19. yüzyıllarda, Birleşik Krallık’ta başlayıp tüm Avrupa’ya yayılan Sanayi Devrimi’nin bir sonucu olan kapitalizmle ilişkilendirmek yanlış olmayacaktır. 21. yüzyıla gelindiğinde ise ekonominin beslendiği yeni kaynaklardan birisini kültür oluşturmuştur. Bu durum ‘kültür endüstrisi’ ve ‘kültür ekonomisi’ gibi kavramların ortaya çıkmasını sağlamıştır. Kültür ekonomisi ve endüstrisi, Birleşmiş Milletler Eğitim ve Kültür Komisyonu UNESCO’nun 2003 yılında kabul ettiği Somut Olmayan Kültürel Miras Sözleşmesi’nde ve yine 2005’te Kültürel İfadelerin Çeşitliliğinin Korunması ve Geliştirilmesi Sözleşmesi’nde üzerinde durulan, korumaya yönelik yaklaşımların ve bu yaklaşımların sonucunda yapılması amaçlanan çalışmalardan birini oluşturur. İzmit, kültür ekonomisi bağlamında, ‘kentsel bir imge’ ile ele alınacaksa bu şüphesiz kentle özdeşleşmiş bir ürün olan ‘pişmaniye’ ile olacaktır. Kentin en büyük simgesi olan ‘pişmaniye’ uzun yıllardır İzmit coğrafyasında varlığını sürdüren, İzmit’le birlikte anılan, kendisine yurt içi ve yurt dışında pazar ve tanıtım alanları bulan bir üründür. İzmit’in dışa açılan penceresi olan pişmaniye, kentin ulusal ve uluslararası alanda tanıtımını yapmaktadır. ‘Kentsel imgeler’ aynı zamanda kentlerin reklam araçlarıdır, bu sayede kilometrelerce mesafelere yayılan bir tanıtma faaliyetine aracılık ederler. Bu çalışmada kültür ve ekonomi ilişkisi bağlamında, İzmit ve pişmaniye örneği üzerinden simgesel ürünlerinin şehir ekonomisine ve hayatına katkıları ele alınacaktır.
