Bibliometric Analysis of Published Articles on the Prevalence of Molar Incisor Hypomineralization

Abstract

Background: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental enamel defect affecting one or more permanent molars and incisors, which both genetic and environmental factors may cause. Affected teeth often present with various issues such as aesthetic problems, hypersensitivity, and post-eruptive breakdown. This study was conducted in response to a literature review that revealed a paucity of bibliometric research on the prevalence of MIH.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on April 20, 2025, using the Scopus database. A search was also performed in the Web of Science database using the same inclusion criteria; however, due to the limited number of records retrieved and their overlap with Scopus, the final analysis was based solely on Scopus data. After applying the defined inclusion criteria, a total of 96 articles published between 2005 and 2024 were identified. The data were exported and subsequently analyzed using the Biblioshiny package within RStudio.

Results: A total of 96 articles and 429 authors were identified in the study. The journal with the highest number of publications was European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry. Almubarak H. was recognized as the most prolific author, while India ranked first in terms of publication count.

Conclusions: This study evaluates the existing literature on the prevalence of MIH, presenting the current academic landscape in this field. The findings provide information on elements such as the number of publications and their distribution by year, region, and journal. The results serve as a guide and an encouragement for future research.
